Nearly everywhere else in the world, emeralds form in igneous rock, where iron is abundant. Iron mutes an emerald's color, pulling it toward gray and steel. Colombia is the great exception: here, emeralds crystallized in sedimentary black shale, in hydrothermal veins of white calcite — an environment almost free of iron. The color agents left are chromium and vanadium, and they produce something no other origin can: a pure, saturated green with extraordinary warmth and fire.
That is why, for five centuries, 'Colombian' has been the word against which every other emerald is measured. The Muzo people mined these mountains long before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s; the stones they pulled from the Andes went on to fill the treasuries of Europe, Persia and the Mughal courts. When a gem laboratory today issues an origin opinion of 'Colombia,' the stone's value can multiply on that word alone.
